Self Drive vs Chauffeur-Driven
Both options have their strengths. Here's how to decide.
| Feature | Self Drive | Chauffeur-Driven |
| Freedom to stop anywhere | Complete flexibility | Flexible, driver adjusts |
| Mountain routes (Tawang, Sela Pass) | Not recommended, requires experience | Ideal, experienced mountain drivers |
| City and highway driving in Assam | Great option | Available |
| Meghalaya day trips | Perfect for Shillong, Cherrapunji | Also available |
| Local knowledge and guidance | Your own navigation | Driver acts as local guide |
| Cost for solo or couple travel | More economical | Slightly higher |
| ILP permit areas (Arunachal) | Extra planning needed | We handle ILP assistance |

What documents do I need for self drive car rental?
You need a valid driving licence (minimum 1 year old), a government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN or Passport), and a refundable security deposit. Most verification is done over WhatsApp, no office visit needed in most cases.
Can I take a self drive car to Meghalaya or Shillong?
Yes. Our self drive cars can be taken to Meghalaya, Shillong and other Northeast India destinations with prior approval. Let us know your planned destinations when booking so we can advise on any specific conditions.
Can I take a self drive car to Tawang or Arunachal Pradesh?
We generally recommend chauffeur-driven vehicles for Tawang and high-altitude Arunachal Pradesh routes. The mountain roads, including Sela Pass at 13,700 ft, require significant experience. For these routes, our chauffeur-driven Innova Crysta or HyCross is a much safer and more comfortable choice.
What is the price of self drive car rental in Guwahati?
Palanquin does not publish fixed self-drive rates online, as pricing depends on vehicle type, rental duration and season. WhatsApp us with your vehicle preference and dates for an exact quote within 30 minutes.
Is fuel included in the self drive rental?
No, fuel is at your own expense. The vehicle is handed over with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank. If returned with less fuel, the cost is deducted from your security deposit at current market rates.
